If your passport is lost or stolen, it is your responsibility to inform the concerned authorities’ immediately. Failure to do so may result in your lost or stolen passports being used for illegal activities and you may be liable for aiding and abetting an offence.

IF YOU ARE IN SRI LANKA

  • If your passport is stolen or lost in Sri Lanka, you can report the incident by phone to immigration Department hotline 0094 11 532 9326 and fax 009411-2885358.  Operators are available 8.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. Sri Lanka time, Monday to Friday, excluding Government holidays.
  • Make a complaint to your local police station as soon as possible.
  • Police will transmit the details of your complaint to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
  • Upon receipt by Immigration the details from the police, Immigration and Emigration Department will take necessary measures to cancel the stolen, lost or missing passport.
  • Passport reported lost or stolen can no longer be used for travel. The details of cancellation will be automatically shared worldwide to avoid misuse. Never use the lost or stolen passport again, even you find it later, after making a complaint. You are strongly advised to obtain a new passport immediately to avoid inconvenience

IF YOU ARE IN OVERSEAS

  • Make a complaint to your local police station in the country of residence and obtain a Police report.
  • Download a stolen or lost passport complaint form. (Click Here for Application)
  • Submit the duly filled complaint form together with Police report to the Embassy of Sri Lanka.
  • Embassy of Sri Lanka shall transmit to the Immigration Department in Sri Lanka the details of the stolen or lost passports. Upon receipt of such information, Department will take necessary measures to cancel the stolen, lost or missing passport.
  • Passport reported lost or stolen can no longer be used for travel. The details of cancellation will be automatically shared worldwide to avoid misuse. Never use the lost or stolen passport again, even you find it later, after making a complaint. You are strongly advised to obtain a new passport immediately to avoid inconvenience.
  • If you find another person’s lost Sri Lankan passport, please mail it in a sturdy envelope to the address below.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Never use a Passport reported stolen or lost.
  • Passport reported stolen or lost are invalidated and can no longer be used for travel.
  • The information you provide regarding a Stolen or Lost Passport will be entered in Stolen/Lost Passport System of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka and automatically shared internationally through INTERPOL
  • If you recover the passport after you have reported it lost or stolen, please submit it to the address listed above. When you submit it, if requested – Department will cancel it and return it to you. If not requested, it will be destroyed.
  • Once a passport is reported lost or stolen, it cannot be re-validated.

Procedure to follow to apply for a New Passport in lieu of lost passport from Embassy

Documents Required:

  1. Follow the above instructions to report the lost /stolen Passport and obtain required receipts / reports.
  2. Duly completed application form (Form ‘K’- 35 A). Fill the application using English Block Letters(Download Application Here).
  3. Original Police Report issued by the local police regarding the lost passport. This Document must attest from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country which it issued.
  4. Photocopy of Previous Sri Lankan Passport (If available)
  5. Three clear photographs of 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. Please attach clear photographs with full front face, both ears visible, without covering face by hair and without spectacles. Photographs should be taken within 03 months. Should not be gloss or semi-gloss.
  6. Original Birth Certificate (translations not accepted).
  7. Original Sri Lanka National Identity Card (N.I.C) or driving license.
  8. Original Marriage Certificate (only for female applicants if the surname of the husband should be included in the passport: Optional).
  9. Original Resident Permit Card or letter issued by the Immigration Authority of the Country of Residence indicating the status and category of your visa. This Document must attest from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country which it issued.
  10. Academic and Employment certificates (if the profession is needed to be included in the passport: optional).
  11. Dual Citizenship certificate (if applicable)
  12. Two self-addressed envelopes.

Getting Service through post:

  1. All the original documents / applications must attach and applicant must sign in front of the Honorary Consul appointed by the Government of Sri Lanka for the particular country or region. Applicant must ensure that the Honorary Consul signed at the relevant places of all the documents / Applications.

 Important Notice:

Applicant who has been issued a new passport after 01/01/2018 through Embassy, the following procedures are needed to be followed at the Port of entry to validate the Biometric. There are no facilities at port of departure to provide biometrics.

  1. Passenger to report to primary Immigration counter or Report directly to the Chief Immigration Officer (CIO) at the port of entry.
  2. Biometric Data Acquisition (BDA) form will be issued to the passenger with a unique reference number,
  3. The BDA should be signed in two copies by the passenger
  4. One copy of the BDA is given to the passenger to produce at the Department of Immigration & Emigration at the time of biometrics enrolment
  5. Other copy will be retained at the airport
  6. Passenger could reserve date/time using the online appointment scheduling system at the website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka. Click here to online appointment system.
  7. Passenger reports to the Department of Immigration and Emigration Head Office or any regional office (Matara/ Kandy/ Vavuniya/ Kurunegala
  8. Fingerprint is captured at a special counter arranged at the Overseas Missions Division of the head office and regional offices.
  9. Upon providing biometrics, Department will issue a system generated receipt to confirm completion of biometrics acquisition process. Approximate waiting time is 30-45 minutes for this event.
  10. Border control system will be updated to allow the passenger departure from Sri Lanka. Recommend the Passenger to retain the receipt until departure from Sri Lanka
