Renewal of the Sri Lankan Passport in lieu of current/expired passport

Eligibility: A Sri Lankan citizen by descent or by registration can apply for a Sri Lankan Passport.

 

Note:

  • Ordinary passports are valid for 10 years from the date of issuance unless otherwise endorsed. A new passport should be obtained on the expiry of 10 years from the date of issue, or if there are no pages for visa endorsements.
  • Applicants are advised to apply for the new passports in advance with all required documents below. These applications are processed by the Overseas Missions Branch at the Department of Immigration & Emigration, Colombo.
  • Please note that all supporting documents should be submitted in originals with 01 set of photocopies of each, on one side of A4 size paper along with the duly completed passport application.

Fee for Passport

  • Ordinary adult passport – SEK 1500
  • Minor passport (under 16-years with validity 03-years) – SEK 1225
  • Minor passport (under 16-years with validity 10-years ) – SEK 1500 (a letter requesting the issuance of a 10-year valid passport should be submitted by parents).

  • Postage within Sweden – SEK 140 (single service fee)
  • Postage outside of Sweden – SEK 180 (single service fee)

 

Administrative charges :

  • Photocopies taken by the Embassy in case of non-submission of copies of original documents) – SEK 50
  • Bank fee (cross border transfer) – SEK 50

 

The Embassy does not accept PAYMENTS MADE BY CHEQUES. If paid by the Debit/Credit Cards (Only VISA and Master cards), Bank commission of 1.5% will be added to the payment.

The following documents should be submitted to obtain a new passport in lieu of a current/expired passport

  1. Duly completed passport application Form- “K35A”

Filled-in block capital English letters.

  1. Four clear coloured photographs as per the specifications for Sri Lankan passport photos (Downloads).

– The Photographs must meet the specifications indicated by the guidelines mentioned.

 

  1. Current Passport OR attested copies of the passport (Pages 2,3,4 & 5) by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence. (Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania & Gothenburg, Sweden)

 

  1. Original birth certificate OR attested copy of the birth certificate by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence.

– Please note that an original birth certificate or a certified copy of the original birth certificate should be issued by the Registrar General Department/ District Secretariat/ Divisional Secretariat only-

-English translation of the birth certificate nor e-DAS attested copy shall be considered as the original.

-Photocopies certified by the other parties and translators will not be accepted.

 

5.Valid residence permit OR attested copy of the residence permit card by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence.

-If the applicant is currently in the process of visa extension/renewal, a letter/status of the visa application from the resident country’s Migration Agency should be submitted. The letter must be in English/an English translation, counter-authenticated by the Foreign Ministry of the country of residence.

– Photocopies certified by the other parties and translators will not be accepted.

 

  1. A copy of the Sri Lankan National Identity Card (N.I.C). Not applicable for children under 18 years of age.

 

  1. Dual Citizenship Certificate and foreign passport OR attested copies of the dual citizenship certificate and the foreign passport by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence.

 

  1. If the applicant was born outside Sri Lanka and over 21 years of age those applicants need to submit an affidavit affirming that they will retain Sri Lanka citizenship (Downloads)

 

9. Personbevis from Tax office ( Skatterverket). Applicable only for residents of Sweden. Must be provided in English.

The following additional documents are required for specific requirements

  • Professional/ Academic Certificate / Letter from Employer the applicant desires to include his/her profession in the passport. The document provided must be in English
  • If a married female applicant wishes to have her husband’s surname included/changed from maiden name in the Passport. Only in case of name change consequent to marriage  (applicable to female applicants)

Original marriage certificate OR  Attested copy of the marriage certificate by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence.-Translations of Sri Lankan marriage certificate is not accepted.

If the registration of marriage has taken place outside Sri Lanka, the English translation should be authenticated by the relevant country’s Foreign Ministry.

Photocopies certified by the other parties and translators will not be accepted.

Documents required for minor applicants below 16 years of age who apply for renewal of passport

Note:

Following documents are required to be submitted (originals with 01 set of photocopies from each on one side of A4 size paper) along with the duly completed Form K 35 A application.

  • The applicant/declarant should be the child’s parent/legal guardian.
  • The child and both parents should be present to hand over the application.
  • For minor applicants who are unable to sign, parents can write a part of the child’s name (first name preferable) in the signature cages. (Parents must not place their signature or write their name on the child’s passport application)

  1. Current Passport of the child OR attested copies of the passport (Pages 2,3,4 & 5) by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence.

 

  1. Original Consular Birth Certificate/Consular Birth Certificate OR the attested copy of the birth certificate by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence.

 

  1. If born outside Sri Lanka, Citizenship Certificate or attested copy by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence OR Payment Receipt for Citizenship (if applying for the first time).

 

  1. Current passports of the parents OR attested copies by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence.

 

  1. Valid residence permit OR attested copy of the residence permit card by the Honorary Consul of the country of residence of the child and of both parents.

-If the applicant is currently in the process of visa extension/renewal, a letter/status of the visa application from the resident country’s Migration Agency should be submitted.   1. Consent letter signed by both parents. Both Parents must sign the consent letter for the child.

– A Passport with validity for 10 years for a child under 16 years of age is issued with a special request from the parents. (Downloads)

– Other appropriate documents (such as decision of the court if parents are divorced, death certificate if one or both parents are deceased, documentary evidence with regard to the legal guardianship/custody of the minor).

Important Notice

  • The following procedures should be followed at the port of entry to validate biometrics. There are no facilities at port of departure to provide biometrics.
  • An applicant who has been issued a new passport after 01/01/2018 through the Embassy,
  • Passenger to report to primary Immigration counter or Report directly to the Chief Immigration Officer (CIO) at the port of entry.
  • Biometric Data Acquisition (BDA) form will be issued to the passenger with a unique reference number,
  • The BDA should be signed in two copies by the passenger
  • One copy of the BDA is given to the passenger to produce at the Department of Immigration & Emigration at the time of biometrics enrolment
  • Other copy will be retained at the airport
  • Passenger could reserve date/time using the online appointment scheduling system at the website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka. Click here to online appointment system.
  • Passenger reports to the Department of Immigration and Emigration Head Office or any regional office (Matara/ Kandy/ Vavuniya/ Kurunegala
  • Fingerprint is captured at a special counter arranged at the Overseas Missions Division of the head office and regional offices.
  • Upon providing biometrics, Department will issue a system generated receipt to confirm completion of biometrics acquisition process. Approximate waiting time is 30-45 minutes for this event.
  • Border control system will be updated to allow the passenger departure from Sri Lanka. Recommend the Passenger to retain the receipt until departure from Sri Lanka
