Eligibility

  • At least one of the parties to the marriage should be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
  • Both parties should not be under 18 years of age

Notice of Marriage

Parties can select one of the following methods to submit the Notice of Marriage.

  • If both parties have resided in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania for more than 10 days they can submit their Notice of Marriage under normal license. (Download notice of marriage application)
  • If both parties have resided in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania for more than 4 days, they can submit their Notice of Marriage under Special License. (Download Application here)

Date of Registration

The date and time for registration will be notified to the party, once the application is processed and accepted by the Embassy

Certified copies of Marriage Certificates will be issued on a subsequent date by the Embassy, if required. Additional copies of the Marriage Certificate could be obtained on payment of the prescribed fees

Following documents are required to submit to the Embassy together with the Notice of Marriage:

  1. Passports of both parties. (with photocopies of bio-data page, alterations page and current visa page)
  2. Original Birth Certificates of both parties (should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country)
  3. Passports of witnesses (Two Sri Lankan passport holders)
  4. Affidavit for Civil status/unmarried status of both parties, declared before a Justice of Peace. This certificate should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country
  • Any Foreign party obtain an unmarried certificate, stating their civil status/unmarried status from relevant Government authority, it should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country
  • Divorcees should submit Divorce Certificate (This should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country)
  • In case of widow/widower, should submit the previous marriage certificate and death certificate of the spouse (This should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country issued such document and the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country)

  1. Notice of a Marriage (General/Kandyan) SEK 314
  2. Registration and issuance of a Marriage Certificate (General/Kandyan/Muslim) SEK 492
  3. Registration of Marriage under Special Licence (General/Kandyan) SEK 628
  4. Issuance of Certified Copy of a Marriage Certificate (General/Kandyan/Muslim) SEK 231
  5. Application of a Marriage Licence under Section 24 (Notice of Marriage) Free of Charge

 

IMPORTANT:

  • The payments must be paid prior to the registration of the application at the Embassy.
  • The Embassy does not accept payment made by cheques. If paid by the Debit/Credit Cards (Only accept VISA and Master cards), Bank commission of 1.5% will be added to the payment.
  • Please note that according to the financial regulations of Sri Lanka, the fee paid will NOT be refunded.
