ELIGIBILITY for registration of Birth

Registration of birth of children born outside Sri Lanka to Sri Lankan parents can be registered at the Embassy of Sri Lanka. At least one parent must be a citizen of Sri Lanka or should have dual citizenship at the time of the child’s birth.

The declaration should be submitted within three (3) months of such birth to the Diplomatic / Consular officer of the relevant Embassy. After three (3) months and within one year the Diplomatic / Consular officer will record the reason for the delay and continue the registration.

After one year of the birth, if the registration has not done, Applications should be forwarded to the Registrar General Department (Central Record Room of the Registrar General’s Department, Maligawatte, Colombo 10) to obtain the approval.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

Documents requesting registration for a birth should be submitted by one of the parent or the guardian.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR REGISTRATION OF BIRTH

01 Duly filled declaration of Birth after 3 months (Only if applicable) (Form Registration B6)
02 Original Birth Certificate of the Child (Issued by the relevant authorities in the country of Birth)
03 Sri Lankan Passports of the parents & Declaration of the Citizenship of parents

(At least one parent MUST be a Sri Lankan citizen at time of child’s birth)

04 Original Birth Certificates of the parents
05 Original Visa of the parents
06 Original Marriage Certificate of the parents
07 Original visa of the child (IF available)
  • In case of an application is made after three months, Reg B6 form and a letter addressed to Registrar General giving the reasons for the delay.
  • English translation should be produced for all the documents issued in other than Sinhala, Tamil or English.
  •  If the mother is not present at the Embassy to submit the application, Please note that the father of the child is required to present himself for the registration of the birth of the child.
  • Mother’s presence is not compulsory.

 

Submission of documents for registration

If Declarent is living in Sweden or Accredited country and birth occurs in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania, application for registration of a birth should be forwarded to the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Sweden, Stockholm. If it is not been registered at the country of birth and If the parents are living in Sri Lanka declaration for registration of the birth should be forwarded to the Central Record Room of the Registrar General’s Department, Maligawatte, Colombo 10. (Prior to visit to the Central Record Room, applicants are advised to visit to the Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka located at 2nd Floor of the Ceylinco Building, Colombo 01, to pay the fee. You may submit the application to the Consular Division of the Embassy by hand or post. Consular Division open from Monday to Friday except holidays (09.00 a.m. – 01.00 p.m.). Please obtain an online appointment from embassy website (http://stockholm.embassy.gov.lk) prior to visit to the Embassy to ensure the priority service.

  1. All the original documents / applications must attach and applicant must sign in front of the Honorary Consul appointed by the Government of Sri Lanka for the particular country or region. Applicant must ensure that the Honorary Consul signed at the relevant places of all the documents / Applications.

 

  1. Relevant fee must pay to the Embassy bank account (Details given below) and attach the receipt of the payment to the application / Document.
