Registration of Marriage

 

We assist you to register your marriage under the Sri Lanka Marriage Registration Ordinance of 1988.

To apply for registration of marriage, at least one party should be Sri Lankan OR dual citizen of Sri Lanka, and the application to register the marriage must be submitted by that same party.

Other conditions:

  • Both parties should be eighteen (18) years of age or above as at their last birthday.
  • The parties should not have any kind of relationship prohibited in law.
  • No party should have entered into any legal marriage which is valid at the time.
  • Witnesses accompanied should be 18 years of age or above. Witnesses signing for the Notice of Marriage could be the same or different from the witnesses of the registration of marriage.

Notice of Marriage

Please select one of the following two methods to submit the Notice of Marriage.

  • If both parties are residing in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland Latvia, Lithuania or Norway for more than 10 days they can submit their Notice of Marriage under normal license. (Download notice of marriage application)
  • If both parties are  have residing in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland Latvia, Lithuania or Norway for more than 4 days, they can submit their Notice of Marriage under Special License. (Download Application here)

Required Documents:

Following documents are required to submit to the Embassy together with the Notice of Marriage:

  • Passports of both parties. (with photocopies of bio-data page, alterations page and current visa page)
  • Original Birth Certificates of both parties (should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the relevant country  and attested by the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country)
  • Passports of witnesses (Two Sri Lankan passport holders)
  • Affidavit for Civil status/unmarried status of both parties, declared before a Justice of Peace. This certificate should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the relevant country  and attested by the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country
  • Divorcees should submit the Divorce Certificate (This should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the relevant country  and attested by the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country.
  • In case of widow/widower,  the previous marriage certificate and the death certificate of the spouse should be submitted. (This should be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka for Sri Lankan Citizens. For Foreign Nationals, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the relevant country  and attested by the Diplomatic Mission of Sri Lanka accredited to that country.
  • Valid passports and copies of Bio-Data Page and observations page for witnesses. If these witnesses are different from the witnesses for the registration of marriage, copies of the bio data page and observation page of their passports should also be submitted on the date of submission of the Notice of Marriage.

 

Registration of Marriage

 

Valid identification documents (Ex: valid passport) of both parties and witnesses are required to be submitted.

The date and time for registration will be notified to the party, once the application is processed and accepted by the Embassy.

The Registration of Marriage will be conducted, according to the Sri Lanka Marriage Registration Ordinance of 1988, at the Embassy, on the date/time pre-arranged at the time of the Notice of Marriage.

Both parties should be present at the Consulate General at least 30 minutes prior to the time of the registration of marriage.

Certified copies of the Marriage Certificates will be issued on a subsequent date by the Embassy, if required. Additional copies of the Marriage Certificate could be obtained on payment of the prescribed fees.

IMPORTANT:

  • The payments must be paid prior to the registration of the application at the Embassy.
  • The Embassy does not accept payment made by cheques. If paid by the Debit/Credit Cards (Only accept VISA and Master cards), Bank commission of 1.5% will be added to the payment.
