Citizenship Registration of Children born outside Sri Lanka

ELIGIBILITY for registration of Citizenship

Children born outside Sri Lanka to Sri Lankan parents (At least one of the parents should be a Sri Lankan) needs to be registered at the Department of Immigration and Emigration within one year of birth for the confirmation of the child’s citizenship. A certificate for the Registration of Birth is issued to the applicant. A fine will be imposed in the event of failure to register the birth of a child within a period of one year from the date of birth.

Documents required to Register the Citizenship

All relevant documents indicated below are required to attached to the application Fee

01 Duly completed application form (Citizenship 1 form)

03 Original Foreign Birth Certificate of the child
04 Original Birth Certificates of Parents
05 Original Marriage Certificate of Parents
06 Original Passport of the applying parent

(At least one parent MUST be a Sri Lankan Citizen at the time of the child’s birth)

07 Original Visa or Resident Permit of the applying Parent (Document issued by the Immigration Authority of the Country of Residence indicating the status and category of your visa.)
08 If applying parent is a Sri Lankan citizen by Registration, relevant Registration Certificate

 

09 Declaration of the Citizenship of the applying Parent

(At least one parent MUST be a Sri Lankan citizen at the time of child’s birth)

 

10 Postage (If applicable) IF Within Sweden

11 Bank Fee (If applicable) For Cross Border Transfer (SEK 50) For SEPA Payments (SEK 02)

Submission Procedure:

    1. If Declarent is living in Sweden or Accredited country and birth occurs in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania, application for registration of a Citizenship should be forwarded to the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Sweden, Stockholm.     2. If Citizenship Registration has not been done at the country of birth and If the parents are living in Sri Lanka declaration for registration should be hand over together with the originals of necessary supporting documents with copies thereof to the Citizenship Branch at the Head Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration at the Suhurupaya, Battaramulla, Sri Lanka.

     

    Citizenship Division of the Department of Immigration and Emigration will process the applications and mail the certificates to the Embassy for onward transmission to the applicant.

Fees for Citizenship Registration:

Registration under Citizenship Act – within one year SEK 600

Administrative fee SEK 15

Registration under Citizenship Act – Delayed surcharges – Per year SEK 60

Applicant must pay additional banking charges as follows;

  • The Embassy does not accept PAYMENTS MADE BY CHEQUES. If paid by the Debit/Credit Cards (Only accept VISA and Master cards), Bank commission of 1.5% will be added to the payment.

Ways to submit the application:

Visiting:

You may submit the application to the Consular Division of the Embassy by hand or post. Consular Division open from Monday to Friday except holidays (09.00 a.m. – 01.00 p.m.). Please obtain an online appointment from embassy website (http://stockholm.embassy.gov.lk) prior to visit to the Embassy to ensure the priority service.

Getting Service through post:

  1. All the original documents / applications must attach and applicant must sign in front of the Honorary Consul appointed by the Government of Sri Lanka for the particular country or region. Applicant must ensure that the Honorary Consul signed at the relevant places of all the documents / Applications.
  2. Relevant fee must pay to the Embassy bank account (Details given below) and attach the receipt of the payment to the application / Document.

IMPORTANT:

  • The payments must be made on the confirmation of application.

  • Please note that according to the financial regulations of Sri Lanka, the fee paid will NOT be refunded.
