Repatriation of Human Remains to Sri Lanka

 

 

Step I: 

 

Please note that Next of Kin of the deceased in Sri Lanka should give consent for the funeral arrangements of the deceased overseas and nominate a person who will undertake funeral arrangements overseas. An Affidavit should be signed in this regard by the NOK and submit to the Consular Affairs Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 16th Floor, “Suhurupaya” Sri Subhuthipura Road Battaramulla. In the event the NOK is residing overseas an Affidavit should be submitted by the NOK through the respective Sri Lanka Embassy.

 

Step 2 

 

In order to provide a no objection letter from the Embassy for repatriation of human remains to Sri Lanka please submit the following documentations:

 

  • Original Sri Lankan passport of the deceased and valid visa. (To verify identification and to cancel the passport)
  • Sri Lankan birth certificate of the deceased person
  • Death certificate issued by the respective authority in the country of residence (with English translation)  including the cause of death. In case cause of death is not available in the death certificate, a document verifying cause of death, issued by the health authority should  be presented.
  • Freight certificate issued by the company who is responsible for transportation of coffin/ashes
  • Certificate of cremation (if applicable)
  • Passport of the applicant who is accompanying the coffin/ashes.
  • Document to prove the relationship of the person accompanying the coffin/ashes to the deceased person (birth/marriage certificate. If the person accompanying the coffin/ashes is not a relative of deceased, an immediate family member should issue an authorization letter or an affidavit to the person who is accompanying the coffin/ashes)
  • Flight details (If available)

Only the nominated person by the NoK will be issued the “no objection” certificate along with the cancelled passport upon submission of his/her identification. “No objection” letter is issued free of charge.

 

Transportation of human ashes to Sri Lanka

 

A ‘No Objection Letter’ will be issued by the Embassy for transportation of human ashes to Sri Lanka only if the ashes are sealed in a plastic or a wooden
container that is air-tight and water-tight.

Application process:

The applicant is required to submit a written request to Embassy specifying that human ashes will be transported to Sri Lanka in a metal container. This information will then be transmitted to Consular Division at Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo for approval by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Airport Authorities. Once approval is received from the relevant authorities, the applicant will be informed accordingly by the Embassy and the Embassy will then issue a “No Objection” certificate for transportation of human ashes. The applicant should be an immediate family member of the deceased.

In order to provide a no objection letter from the Embassy for transportation of human ashed to Sri Lanka please submit the following documentations.

  • Original Death Certificate issued by the relevant authorities
  • Original Birth Certificate of the Deceased
  • Copy of the Passport/original passport of the deceased   (duly certified by Notary Public)
  •  Cremation Certificate issued by the relevant authorities
  •  Authorization to repatriate the ashes issued by the relevvant authorities if the ashes are sealed in a metal or a wooden container which is air-tight and water-tight)
  • The identity of the NOK/persons who is travelling along with the ashes : passport copy and visa
  •  Freight Certificate issued by the company who is responsible for transportation of ashes. (Certificate mentioning that ashes are sealed in a plastic or a wooden container that is air-tight and water-tight)
  • Document to prove the relationship to the deceased person with the person
    accompanied the ashes (birth/marriage certificate).
  •  The travel itinerary for repatriation of human ashes.
